# Leonardo.Ai alternatives for typed edits and clearer free tier terms

Leonardo.Ai is a web and mobile generative AI platform for images and video that runs its own Lucid and Phoenix models next to models such as FLUX.2 Pro, Ideogram 4.5 and Nano Banana Pro, with a pay as you go developer API. Two reasons to look elsewhere show up on its own pages: free plan images are public and Leonardo.Ai holds rights to use them, and its homepage promises precise editing without saying you can describe a change in words. Adobe Firefly and ChatGPT Images suit editing by typed instruction, Gemini a no-cost start. ImageQuarry suits people who want every described change saved as its own version.

_We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Leonardo.Ai and each alternative were compared on editing in words, how you start, image visibility, developer access, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026._

## What is Leonardo.Ai?

Leonardo.Ai's homepage calls it "The Creator-First Generative AI Platform". You generate images "from simple prompts or custom models", choosing among its own Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism and Phoenix models and third party ones such as FLUX.2 Pro, GPT Image 2.5, Ideogram 4.5, Nano Banana Pro and Seedream 5.0 Pro. The pricing page names a Realtime Canvas, Flow State and Blueprints, and the docs list upscalers and background removal. It also makes video with models including Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 and its own Motion 2.0, on the web, iOS and Android.

_Leonardo.Ai's web plans and its developer API are separate products: the docs say API access is not included in free or web app subscriptions._

## What Leonardo.Ai does well

- **A wide model menu**: Leonardo.Ai's docs list FLUX.2 Pro, FLUX.1 Kontext, GPT Image 2 and 2.5, Ideogram 3.0 and 4.5, Krea 2 Turbo, Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana 2 and Seedream, alongside its own Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism and Phoenix.
- **Apps for phones as well as the web**: Besides the web app at app.leonardo.ai, Leonardo.Ai lists an iOS app, an Android app, a REST API and an MCP server.
- **Room for references and custom models**: Its pricing page allows 6 image guidance references on paid plans, and you can train your own models from a small set of images, typically 10 to 20.
- **Private images and full ownership from $12**: Essential at $12 a month makes creations private, and Leonardo.Ai's pricing page says paid subscribers keep full ownership and copyright of the images they generate.
- **An API without a commitment**: The API is pay as you go with "No commitments", API credit that does not expire, and up to 10 concurrent generations.

## Where Leonardo.Ai falls short

- **Free tier images are public and licensed back**: Free creations are public, and the pricing page says Leonardo.Ai "holds rights to use, reproduce, modify, and distribute any images you create" on the free tier, granting you a non-exclusive licence for commercial use.
- **Editing in words is not spelled out**: The homepage section "Edit with precision" talks about refining work without starting over, but no wording about describing a change in words was found on the pages read as of October 2026.
- **API billed apart and in transition**: The docs say API access is separate from free or web app subscriptions, and that Leonardo.Ai is moving from subscription plans to a pay as you go model.
- **A thin free plan**: Free accounts get basic quality settings and a single personal collection, against unlimited collections on paid plans.

## Why people look for a Leonardo.Ai alternative

- You want to edit by typing what should change, and Leonardo.Ai's pages describe precise editing without saying it works from a written instruction.
- You want to start at no cost without your work being public, and on Leonardo.Ai private generations are paid only.
- You want the images you make on a no-cost tier to stay yours, while Leonardo.Ai's terms let it use, modify and distribute free tier images.
- You want the web app and API on one bill, and the docs say API access is separate from web subscriptions.

## The 6 Leonardo.Ai alternatives

### 1. Adobe Firefly

Best for: Leonardo.Ai users who want typed edits and a commercial statement covering the vendor's own models
How it differs: Firefly's Prompt to Edit is described in plain terms: type what you want to change, and it adds, removes or replaces objects and backgrounds. Adobe states that outputs from its own Firefly models are safe for commercial use, and its free plan offers daily generations that refresh every day.
Price: Free daily generations; Standard US$9.99 a month with 2,000 generative credits (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Premium features such as Text to Video use credits, and for partner models Adobe leaves it to you to judge whether the content suits your project.

### 2. ChatGPT Images

Best for: People who would rather ask for changes in a chat than set up a generation
How it differs: In ChatGPT you attach an image to the composer and ask for the edit, or select one area and say what should change there. Canvas view shows every image from the chat, and Comment adds feedback to one or several of them. The free plan includes limited image creation.
Price: Free plan with limited image creation; Go $8 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: How many images you can make depends on your plan and workspace settings, and the image API is a separate product from ChatGPT plans.

### 3. ImageQuarry

Best for: Refining one image through many typed requests while every earlier take stays
How it differs: Leonardo.Ai's homepage talks about refining work without starting over. ImageQuarry makes that a conversation: select a version, type the change, such as a new background or warmer light, and the result arrives as a new version while the earlier ones stay. You can also say what to keep, add references, and branch from any version.
Price: Starter $9 per month, or Pro $29 per month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Both plans are paid, it does not make video, and ImageQuarry has not published Terms or a rights policy yet.

### 4. Gemini

Best for: A no-cost start where you edit simply by telling the assistant what to change
How it differs: Google says you can ask Gemini to change the background, replace an object or add an element, and you can upload your own image and ask for edits. Its no-cost plan includes image generation and editing, and you can apply the texture, color or style of a reference photo to your subject.
Price: No-cost plan with image editing; Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Gemini adds a visible watermark as well as an invisible SynthID one, you must be 18 or over, and Nano Banana 2.1 needs a Google AI plan.

### 5. Ideogram

Best for: Designs with lettering, where you want the vendor to claim no ownership of results
How it differs: Ideogram's pricing page says it does not claim ownership of generated images and that you can use them for any purpose, including commercial use. Ideogram 4.5 lets you start from an existing image and describe a change, with Precise Edit taking a focused instruction plus optional masks.
Price: Weekly credits for eligible free accounts; Plus $20 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Images are published to the community by default below Plus, and editing with AI needs priority credits, so it is not available in the slow queue.

### 6. Krea

Best for: People who like Leonardo.Ai's range of models and want a live canvas and node editor too
How it differs: Krea's homepage offers "Edit by typing", and its Agent plans, generates and iterates across models from one brief. Like Leonardo.Ai it mixes in-house models with third party ones such as Nano Banana Pro and Ideogram, and its free plan gives 100 units a day with all image models.
Price: Free plan; Basic $9 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Krea's FAQ names only paid plans as including a commercial license, and no iOS or Android app appears on its pages.

## Who should stay with Leonardo.Ai

- You switch between many model families and like having Lucid, Phoenix, FLUX.2, Ideogram and Nano Banana models in one Leonardo.Ai account.
- You already pay for Essential or above, where creations are private and you keep full ownership of what you generate.
- You build on the pay as you go API, whose credit does not expire and which runs up to 10 generations at once.
- You rely on personal models trained from 10 to 20 of your own images.

## How to try an alternative alongside Leonardo.Ai

1. Go through your personal collections in Leonardo.Ai and download the images you still want to change.
2. For images made on the free tier, reread Leonardo.Ai's terms before reusing them, since its pricing page says it holds rights to use free tier creations.
3. Pick two or three edits you wanted to make and ask the alternative for each one in a single plain sentence, then judge how closely the result follows it.
4. Write down the Leonardo.Ai models behind your favorite results, such as Lucid Origin or Phoenix, and try a few models in the new tool to find the nearest look.
5. Leave any API integration on Leonardo.Ai until the replacement has run the same jobs, since API credit there does not expire.

Does not carry over: Personal models, Elements and Blueprints are built inside Leonardo.Ai and stay with your account there.

## Leonardo.Ai alternatives: questions

### What is a good free alternative to Leonardo.Ai?

It depends on what you need from the no-cost tier. Adobe Firefly gives free daily generations and says outputs from its own models are safe for commercial use, Gemini's free plan includes image generation and editing, ChatGPT's free plan has limited image creation, and Krea gives 100 units a day. Leonardo.Ai's own free plan has 150 fast tokens a day, with public creations. ImageQuarry has only paid plans.

### Is there a Leonardo.Ai alternative where I just describe the edit?

Yes. Adobe Firefly's Prompt to Edit works from a typed description, ChatGPT lets you select an area and describe the change, Gemini edits when you tell it to swap a background or object, and Ideogram 4.5 changes an existing image from a described change. ImageQuarry turns each change you describe into a new version and keeps the earlier ones.

### Which alternative keeps images private without paying?

On the pages read in October 2026, none of these tools says images made at no cost are private. Ideogram publishes images by default unless you are on Plus or Pro, and Leonardo.Ai's free creations are public. Among paid options, Leonardo.Ai Essential at $12 a month and Ideogram Plus at $20 a month both include private generation.

### What is cheaper than Leonardo.Ai Essential?

Essential is $12 a month billed monthly. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month and ChatGPT Go is $8 a month, and both Krea Basic and Adobe Firefly Standard come in just under $10 a month. Tokens, credits and units are not interchangeable between these products, so price them by what you need to make.

### Which Leonardo.Ai alternatives have an API?

Ideogram offers API access on pay as you go credits at 1 cent each, Krea has a public API for images and video, and OpenAI sells an image generation API apart from ChatGPT plans. Leonardo.Ai's own API is pay as you go and separate from its web subscriptions.

### How does ImageQuarry compare with Leonardo.Ai?

Leonardo.Ai covers images and video on the web, iOS and Android, with a no-cost tier and a separate API. ImageQuarry is a workspace for still images where you describe an image, ask for changes in words and keep each result as a version in a project. It offers four models, with Nano Banana 2.1 as the default, on two paid plans: Starter at $9 and Pro at $29 a month.
