FLUX alternatives for Black Forest Labs image model users
FLUX is the family of image models from Black Forest Labs (bfl.ai), now led by FLUX 3, which handles image, video, audio and robotics action prediction, and sold through a pay as you go API, a browser Playground and self hosted open weights licenses. People look for an alternative mainly because Black Forest Labs sells no subscription and lists no free credits, so every image is paid per generation, and because it offers no mobile app. Krea fits people who want FLUX among many models in a full app with a daily free allowance, Replicate and fal fit developers who want FLUX next to other model families behind one API, and ComfyUI and Stability AI fit open weights work. ImageQuarry fits people who want an image workspace rather than a model.
We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. FLUX and each alternative were compared on model range, how you start, app or developer access, open weights, editing in words and price per image, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026.

What is FLUX?
Black Forest Labs presents FLUX 3 as "One multimodal model for Image, Video, Audio and Action-Prediction", next to FLUX 3 Image Klein, FLUX 3 Video and FLUX Tools. Its API also serves the FLUX.2 models, with FLUX.2 [pro] as the recommended default for generation and editing, and the earlier FLUX.1 Kontext models. You edit with FLUX 3 Image by writing the change as an instruction, with bounding boxes for one element, and combine up to ten references. You pay per image in the API or the browser Playground, or license open weights to self host.
This page is about FLUX, the image models from Black Forest Labs, not FLUX AI the PCB design tool, the Flux deployment software or the f.lux screen app.
FLUX pricing
One credit is $0.01, and the API and Playground cost the same. FLUX 3 Image at 2K is $0.10 and at 4K $0.607 an image; FLUX 3 Image Klein runs $0.008 to $0.036 depending on size, and editing costs the same as generating. Self hosted licenses (Builder, Platform and others) are listed without prices. Prices as of October 2026, from bfl.ai. Check the vendor for current pricing.

What FLUX does well
Edits written as instructions
FLUX 3 Image takes the change as an instruction, and bounding boxes let you "recolor, move, replace, or remove one element while the rest stays unchanged."
Many references at once
FLUX 3 Image can combine up to ten references, and FLUX.2 supports up to 10 reference images with output up to 4MP.
Low prices for the small models
FLUX 3 Image Klein costs $0.008 to $0.036 an image depending on size, and FLUX.2 [klein] 4B starts at $0.014 for the first megapixel.
Clear commercial terms for API output
Black Forest Labs' Developer Terms say you own the output and may use it for personal or commercial purposes, and its help center says API usage includes full commercial rights.
API, Playground, MCP and open weights
You can use FLUX in the browser Playground, through the REST API, from any MCP client via the FLUX MCP server, or self host it under an open weights license.
Where FLUX falls short
No subscription and no free credits listed
The pricing page says "No subscriptions, no seat fees. Only pay for what you generate", and no free credits were found there.
No mobile app
Black Forest Labs offers the browser Playground, the API, open weights and an MCP server, and no iOS or Android app was found on its pages.
Self hosting prices are not published
Builder, Platform, Professional and Enterprise open weights licenses show "Purchase" or "Contact Sales" instead of prices.
Provenance data you cannot remove
The Developer Terms say Black Forest Labs may embed Content Credentials or other provenance data in output and prohibit removing it.
Why people look for a FLUX alternative
- You want to try generating before you pay for each image, and no free credits were found on Black Forest Labs' pricing page.
- You want other model families next to FLUX, and Black Forest Labs serves only its own FLUX models.
- You want a finished app, including on a phone, and Black Forest Labs offers a browser Playground and an API but no mobile app.
- You want to self host with a published price, and FLUX open weights licenses are sold through purchase or sales contact.
The 6 FLUX alternatives
Ordered by how many of the reasons above each one answers: a way to start before paying, other model families next to FLUX, and an app or open weights with stated terms. ImageQuarry is last because it is a paid app with no developer access or open weights.
1. Krea
Best for: People who want FLUX and other models in a full app with a renewing free allowance
How it differs from FLUX: Krea runs Flux 2, Flux 3 Image and Flux Kontext inside its app next to its own Krea 3, Nano Banana, GPT Image and Ideogram. Instead of paying per image from the start, you get 100 units a day on the free plan, then monthly plans, and you can edit by typing on any image. It also has a public API.
Price: Basic $9 a month billed monthly, after a free plan of 100 units a day (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Krea's monthly compute units on Basic, Pro and Max expire, and no iOS or Android app was found on its pages.
2. Replicate
Best for: Developers who want FLUX and other labs' models through one API with a free start
How it differs from FLUX: Replicate hosts Black Forest Labs models such as FLUX 2 Max and FLUX 1.1 Pro next to Nano Banana 2, GPT Image 2, Imagen 4 Ultra and Seedream, all through one API. A Try for Free collection lets you run some models a limited number of times without a credit card, and its terms grant you rights in output for commercial use, subject to third party terms.
Price: flux-1.1-pro $0.04 per output image, usage based (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: There are no subscription plans, the Playground needs a desktop or laptop, and free runs are limited before billing starts.
3. fal
Best for: Teams building media apps who want FLUX among 1,000+ models and GPU options
How it differs from FLUX: fal calls itself a generative media inference platform with 1,000+ image, video, audio and 3D models behind one API, including Flux 3 Image, FLUX 2, Nano Banana 2.1 and Seedream 5.0. Its Sandbox compares models side by side before you commit, and serverless GPUs are available if you deploy your own.
Price: Flux 3 Image $0.048 per megapixel; FLUX 2 $0.012 per megapixel (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: fal describes no standing free tier, each model has its own license, and generated files sit on public CDN URLs by default.
4. ComfyUI
Best for: Technical users who want to run FLUX and other open models on their own hardware
How it differs from FLUX: ComfyUI is GPL v3 open source software that runs Flux.1, Flux.2, Qwen Image, SD3.5 and other open models locally, with Flux Kontext and Flux.2 Klein among its editing models. It reaches closed models such as Nano Banana through partner nodes, and it runs offline unless you ask it to download something.
Price: Open source; Comfy Cloud Standard USD 20 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Running it locally means installing models and building workflows yourself, and the license for each model you load still applies.
5. Stability AI
Best for: Small companies that want self hosted image models with a no-cost license
How it differs from FLUX: Stability AI's Community License is free for researchers, developers and businesses with less than $1M in annual revenue, which answers the published-price question FLUX self hosting leaves open. Its Platform API gives 25 free credits to start, at $0.01 a credit, and has edit endpoints such as Search and Replace, which names the object to swap in text.
Price: API at $0.01 a credit with 25 free credits; SD 3.5 Large 6.5 credits an image (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: No current consumer image app was found, the Stable Assistant pages now redirect, and Enterprise licenses above $1M revenue are custom priced.
6. ImageQuarry
Best for: Non-developers who want a place to make and refine images, not a model to call
How it differs from FLUX: FLUX is a family of models you call through an API or try in a Playground. ImageQuarry is a workspace built on a choice of four models (Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst): you describe an image, ask for changes in plain words, and keep every version in projects. You can pick another model when you want a different result for the same request.
Price: Monthly plans: Starter $9, Pro $29 (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Its four models are Google and GPT Image models only, it has no open weights or developer access, and every plan is paid.
Who should stay with FLUX
- You build on the API and want per image prices as low as FLUX 3 Image Klein's, with no subscription to manage.
- You need instruction edits with bounding boxes and up to ten references from FLUX 3 Image.
- You want output ownership and commercial use stated in the Developer Terms for API work.
- You plan to self host FLUX under a Builder or Platform license.
How to try an alternative alongside FLUX
- List the FLUX models and sizes you call most, since Krea, Replicate, fal and ComfyUI also run several FLUX models.
- Save the prompts, reference images and bounding box edits behind your best results.
- Run the same prompts on one or two other model families in the alternative and compare them with your FLUX output.
- Compare per image or per megapixel prices for your usual size, keeping in mind each provider bills differently.
- Keep your Black Forest Labs account for the models you still prefer, since it has no subscription to cancel.
Does not carry over: Black Forest Labs credits and self hosting license terms stay with Black Forest Labs; other platforms bill and license separately.
FLUX alternatives: questions
Is there a free FLUX alternative?
Krea's free plan gives 100 units a day and includes Flux models, ComfyUI is open source software that runs Flux.1 and Flux.2 locally, Stability AI's Community License is free for businesses under $1M a year in revenue, and Replicate lets you run some models free a limited number of times. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.
Is FLUX the same as Flux AI for PCB design?
No. FLUX here means the image models from Black Forest Labs at bfl.ai. Search suggestions for flux alternatives also include a PCB design tool and other software with the same name, which are unrelated products.
What is an open source alternative to FLUX?
ComfyUI is open source under GPL v3 and runs open models such as Flux.1, Flux.2, Qwen Image and SD3.5. Stability AI publishes Stable Diffusion 3.5 weights for self hosting under its Community License.
Which FLUX alternative has an API with other models?
Replicate and fal each serve FLUX next to models from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and others through one API, and Krea has a public API for images and video. Stability AI's Platform API serves its Stable Diffusion models.
How does ImageQuarry compare with the Black Forest Labs models?
FLUX is a set of models for developers and the Playground. ImageQuarry is an app where you create an image, change it by describing what should differ, and keep each version, choosing between Nano Banana 2.1, Nano Banana Pro and two GPT Image 2.5 models, on Starter at $9 or Pro at $29 a month.
