# Canva alternatives for people who mostly make AI images

Canva is a design suite for layouts, social posts and presentations, and it adds AI image tools on top: an image generator, Magic Edit, where you brush an area and describe the change, and the chat-based Canva AI. People who mostly make images look elsewhere because Canva caps AI tool uses each month and does not name the models behind its generator. Adobe Firefly suits people who want to pick from many models, Recraft suits designers who need vectors, and Adobe Express is the closest swap for people who still want templates and layouts. ImageQuarry is for people who would rather keep reworking a single image by describing each change.

_We make ImageQuarry, one of the alternatives below. Canva and each alternative were compared on editing in words, model choice, monthly AI allowances, design canvas, platforms and price, using each vendor's public pages, checked October 20, 2026._

## What is Canva?

Canva is a design editor first. Its help centre, read as search indexed text because canva.com blocked direct fetches, describes Canva AI 2.0 as a chat-based workspace inside the editor where you can refine a design by typing a prompt. Magic Edit edits a region: you brush over part of a photo, describe what to add or replace, and click Generate. Canva says Magic Edit is powered by Google's Nano Banana model, and it also lists Magic Eraser, AI Image Expander, Image Upscaler, Generative Fill and Magic Grab.

_Canva is a layout and design suite with AI image features added, not a workspace built around generating and refining images._

## Canva pricing

Canva's pricing comes from search indexed text of canva.com/pricing, and two indexed copies disagree: another copy shows US$120 a year for Pro and US$200 a year per person for Business, probably an older version. An AI Pass add-on is listed at USD $100 per person per month, and Business can buy AI top-ups. Prices as of October 2026, from canva.com. Check the vendor for current pricing.

- Canva Free: US$0 per month (Up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools a month)
- Canva Pro: US$18 per month, billed month to month (Up to 200 Premium AI uses or 20 Ultra AI uses a month; US$12 a month per person billed yearly (US$144 a year))
- Canva Business: US$25 per month, billed month to month (Up to 400 Premium AI uses or 40 Ultra AI uses a month; US$20.83 a month per person billed yearly (US$250 a year))

Prices as of 2026-10.

## What Canva does well

- **AI image tools inside a full design editor**: Canva's indexed help pages list a text to image generator that also works without opening the editor, plus Magic Eraser, AI Image Expander, Image Upscaler, Generative Fill and Magic Grab, all next to Canva's templates and layouts.
- **Brush an area and describe the change**: Magic Edit lets you paint over part of a photo and type what to add or replace there, and Canva's AI Photo Editor page says it runs on Google's Nano Banana model.
- **A chat workspace in the editor**: Canva AI 2.0 opens from the homepage or the Canva AI button, and the help centre describes refining a design by typing the change into the Canva AI tab.
- **A free plan and apps on every device**: The Free plan costs US$0 and includes up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools a month, and Canva runs on the web plus Android and iOS apps, with Canva AI 2.0 editing on desktop and mobile.
- **Older versions of a design can be restored**: Canva's help centre, read as search indexed text, says paid users can open File, then Version history, compare up to 1,000 earlier versions of a design, and restore one or make a copy of it. Free users do not get version history.

## Where Canva falls short

- **AI uses are counted and capped each month**: The indexed pricing page caps AI tools at 20 uses a month on Free, 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses on Pro, and 400 Premium or 40 Ultra uses on Business.
- **Typing changes into Canva AI needs a paid plan**: The help article on refining a design through the Canva AI tab says the feature is available on Canva Pro, Business and Enterprise.
- **The generator's models are not named**: Canva names Nano Banana for Magic Edit, but the indexed text of its image generator pages does not say which models create new images.
- **Prices differ between copies of the pricing page**: One indexed copy shows Pro at US$144 a year and Business at US$250 a year, while another shows US$120 and US$200, so check canva.com before you budget. Heavy AI use is sold as an AI Pass at USD $100 per person per month.

## Why people look for a Canva alternative

- Your work is mostly images rather than layouts, and you want a tool built around generating and editing them instead of a design editor with AI tools added.
- You keep running into the monthly AI caps: 20 uses on the Free plan and 200 Premium uses on Pro, according to Canva's indexed pricing page.
- You want to choose the image model yourself, and Canva's generator pages do not name the models they use.
- You want to type edits to an image without a paid plan, since refining through the Canva AI tab is listed for Pro, Business and Enterprise.

## The 6 Canva alternatives

### 1. Adobe Firefly

Best for: People who want to pick between Adobe's own image model and partner models for each image
How it differs: Firefly is an image, video and audio app first, with Adobe's Firefly Image 5 next to partner models such as GPT Image 1.5, Nano Banana 2 and FLUX.2 [pro]. Prompt to Edit adds, removes or replaces objects and backgrounds from a typed description, and standard image features like Generative Fill are unlimited on every paid plan rather than counted against a monthly use cap.
Price: Free daily generations, or Standard at US$9.99 monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Adobe's commercial safety statement covers its own Firefly models only, and premium features such as Text to Video still spend credits.

### 2. Recraft

Best for: Designers who need vectors, reusable brand styles and edits made by describing them
How it differs: Recraft Studio generates raster images, editable vectors and mockups, and its editor takes a plain language description of the change and renders it on the same canvas. You can drop in your own images to build a reusable custom style, which Canva's indexed pages do not describe for its generator.
Price: Free plan; Basic $12 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Free plan images are public, owned by Recraft and not licensed for commercial use, and the free plan only runs Recraft's own models.

### 3. Adobe Express

Best for: Canva users who still make social posts and flyers from templates and want Adobe's AI in the same app
How it differs: Adobe Express does the same design job as Canva, social posts, images, videos and flyers, and adds Generate Image, Insert object and Remove object, where you brush an area and click Generate. Its Free plan lists free daily generations for images and object edits instead of a monthly count, and Adobe says the AI is designed to be commercially safe.
Price: Free plan; Adobe Express Monthly $9.99 in Adobe's iOS app listing (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: The AI Assistant that edits by prompt is a limited beta for Premium, on desktop and in English (US) only, and the web pricing page was served with localized VAT prices.

### 4. ImageQuarry

Best for: People whose Canva work has turned into refining single images through many rounds of changes
How it differs: Canva's Magic Edit changes the brushed area of one image inside a design. ImageQuarry is built for the image itself: describe it or upload one, select a version, ask for the change in words, and each request produces a new version while the earlier ones stay. You choose between Nano Banana 2.1, the default, Nano Banana Pro and two GPT Image models, and you can branch from any earlier version.
Price: Starter $9, Pro $29 monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: There are no templates, layouts or presentation tools, every plan is paid, and ImageQuarry has not published output specifications or Terms yet.

### 5. Kittl

Best for: Brands and print-on-demand sellers who want templates plus many named image models
How it differs: Kittl is a design platform like Canva, but its image generator names its models, including ChatGPT Image 2, Nano Banana Pro 4K, Seedream 5.0 Lite, Ideogram 3 Quality and Recraft V4 Pro. Uploaded images can act as references alongside your prompt, and it adds vectorizing and background removal.
Price: Free plan; Pro $15 a month billed monthly (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Kittl's help pages describe Remix for new versions but no edits made by typing an instruction, and the Free plan is for personal use with generated images shown in the public Explore tab.

### 6. Microsoft Designer

Best for: Personal projects such as cards, invitations and stickers at no cost
How it differs: Microsoft Designer turns a description into images, greeting cards, invitations, stickers and collages, and it is free to use, with a subscription for people who create more often. Its edits are erasing, background blur or removal, framing and upscaling, not changes described in words.
Price: Free to use; a subscription may be required for frequent use (as of 2026-10)
Limitation: Designer is licensed for personal, non-commercial use, so it does not fit business design work that Canva Pro or Business covers.

## Who should stay with Canva

- Most of your work is layouts, social posts and presentations, and AI images are one ingredient among templates, text and brand assets.
- Your team already shares designs and brand material in Canva Business, and 400 Premium AI uses a month covers your image needs.
- You edit on your phone as often as on a computer, and Canva's Android and iOS apps carry Canva AI 2.0 editing with them.

## How to try an alternative alongside Canva

1. Pick three images you made with Canva's generator or Magic Edit recently, and write down the prompt and the change you asked for on each.
2. Download the source photos and finished images you want to keep working on from Share, then Download, which Canva's help centre lists for JPG, PNG and SVG files.
3. Recreate the same three jobs in the alternative, including one region edit you would normally brush with Magic Edit, and compare the results.
4. Keep laying out the finished images in Canva if you like its templates, and use the new tool only for the image work that hit Canva's caps.

Does not carry over: Canva designs, templates, brand kits and Magic Edit selections stay in Canva; only the exported images move.

## Canva alternatives: questions

### Is there a free Canva alternative with AI image tools?

Adobe Firefly offers free daily generations, Adobe Express lists free daily generations for images and object edits, Recraft and Kittl have free plans, and Microsoft Designer is free to use, as of October 2026. Canva's own Free plan includes up to 20 AI tool uses a month. Every ImageQuarry plan is paid.

### Which Canva alternative lets me choose the AI model?

Adobe Firefly lists Firefly Image 5 plus partner models from Google, OpenAI and others, Kittl lists models such as ChatGPT Image 2 and Nano Banana Pro 4K, and Recraft paid plans add Nano Banana, Seedream, GPT Image and Flux. In ImageQuarry you pick one of four models for each request, with Nano Banana 2.1 as the default.

### What is the closest alternative to Canva's Magic Edit?

Adobe Express has Insert object and Remove object, where you brush an area and click Generate, and Adobe Firefly's Prompt to Edit changes objects and backgrounds from a typed description. Recraft's editor takes a plain language description and renders the edit on the same canvas.

### Which alternative is cheapest per month?

Of the paid plans read on October 20, 2026, Adobe Firefly Standard is US$9.99 a month, Recraft Basic $12 a month billed monthly and Kittl Pro $15 a month, against Canva Pro at US$18 month to month. Each counts AI usage in its own units, so compare what you make rather than the credit totals.

### Can I take my Canva images to another tool?

Yes, by downloading them. Canva's help centre, read as search indexed text, lists images as JPG, PNG and SVG under Share, then Download, and says transparent PNG, SVG and the quality and scale options are for Pro, Business, Education and Nonprofits accounts. Designs, templates and version history stay in Canva.

### How does ImageQuarry compare with Canva?

Canva is a design suite where AI images sit next to templates and layouts. ImageQuarry is only an image workspace: you create or upload an image, ask for changes in words, and keep each version, with plans at $9 and $29 a month. If you need layouts or presentations, keep Canva for that part.
